Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) “Plus 1 Year”

The program is conducted in partnership with the Rowan-Virtua Neuromusculoskeletal Institute (NMI). The Rowan-Virtua NMI is a multidisciplinary center that includes the departments of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, Orthopedics, Physiatry, Physical Therapy, Headache Medicine and Substance Use Disorder. The NMI is recognized as the first Center for Excellence in the state of New Jersey.

Residents treat patients who are referred from these specialties, as well as those referred from the larger medical community. ONMM3 residents will have extensive clinic time to learn to apply OMM into a variety of patients with both acute and chronic disease.

Site 1:
Rowan-Virtua SOM Ambulatory
Site 2: Morristown Medical Center (Atlantic Health Systems)
Site 3: Rothman Orthopaedics
Site 4: South Jersey Radiology Associates

*ONMM Inpatient: Resident will attend ONMM Inpatient Rotation (Site 2) every other Monday for the duration of the residency program or until they reach 26 days in aforementioned rotation.

Continuity of Care Clinic: Residents will spend an average of one to three half sessions per week to accommodate the longitudinal ONMM Inpatient Rotation. Residents will also have a month-long Continuity Clinic block.

Elective Options: Outpatient NMM/OMM, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/Gyn, PMR, Substance Use/Psychiatry, Academic Medicine Medicinal Acupuncture (all at Site 1), Sports Medicine, Orthopedics (Site 3).

Vacations: Residents have 21 days of vacation (four weeks), which may be scheduled in one week increments with approval from the Program Director.

Training Sites


Hospital Training Sites

Morristown Medical Center (AHS), located in Morristown, NJ, offers ONMM Inpatient rotation with NMM/OMM board certified attendings. Morristown Medical Center is one of seven hospital campuses that makes up Atlantic Health Systems New Jersey. It has 735 licensed beds with approximately 42,814 admissions a year and 93,367 ER visits a year. Morristown Medical Center’s Luciano Family Trauma and Acute Care Center is verified as a level I Regional Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons and designated a level II by the state of New Jersey. Morristown Medical Center has the Goryeh Children’s Hospital located on campus with 65 beds. There are also laboratory and medical imaging services available at this campus.

Ambulatory Training Sites

Rowan-Virtua SOM Department of Osteosciences offers an ambulatory residency training site in Stratford. This site offers full-scope ambulatory care for patients with pain disorders, including psychiatry, pain management, osteopathic manipulative medicine, headache center, substance use, and psychology. Residents will complete their pain management and PM&R rotations as well as ambulatory OMM clinic sessions at this location.

Rowan-Virtua SOM Department of Internal Medicine offers an ambulatory residency training site in Stratford. This site offers ambulatory care for patients in internal medicine, which includes general internal medicine, pulmonology, rheumatology, and infectious disease. Residents will complete their rheumatology rotation at this location.

Rothman Orthopaedics offers an ambulatory residency training site in Marlton. This site offers full-scope orthopedic specialties, as well as sports medicine. Residents will complete their orthopedic and sports medicine rotations at this location.   

Conferences and Didactics

Didactics are hosted Friday afternoons 12 - 4 p.m., and revolve around the following literature: Anatomy Trains; Grays AnatomyPhilosophy of Osteopathy, A.T. Still; Life in Motion: The Osteopathic Vision of Rollin E. Becker, DO; and Teaching in the Science of Osteopathy, W.G. Sutherland. We include guest lectures from each rotation and are currently coordinating didactic sessions in our Anatomy lab.
