Our NMM/OMM+1 Residency is ideal for residents who want to hone their osteopathic manipulative skills to better serve their patients. We emphasize the philosophy of incorporating the mind, body, and spirit when approaching the treatment of a whole patient. This program provides physicians extensive clinic time, where they apply OMM techniques to patients with both acute and chronic disease.

The program is conducted through RowanSOM's Neuromusculoskeletal Institute (NMI). The NMI is a multidisciplinary center that includes the departments of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, Orthopedics, Physiatry, Physical Therapy and a Headache Center. Residents treat patients who are referred from these specialties, as well as those referred from the larger medical community.

The plus one residency in NMM/OMM is designed to train physicians as traditional osteopaths who can incorporate Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) into any specialty. We work hand-in-hand with affiliated partners in Southern New Jersey, including Atlantic Health System, Inspira Health and the Rothman Institute. In addition to specialty and primary care experience, we strive to ensure our residents also have significant understanding and hands-on opportunities related musculoskeletal fields.
A sample rotation schedule includes:

  • Sports Medicine
  • Prosthetics/Orthotics
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation
  • Orthopedics
  • Pain Management
  • Headache Management
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Electives/AOBNMM requirements not otherwise completed

Conferences and Didactics

Residents participate in weekly didactic sessions in osteopathic philosophy, anatomy and embryology throughout the year. These weekly discussions are led by our Physiatry and NMM/OMM+1 faculty and include topics such as: A.T. Still, anatomy trains, and history of the profession. Additionally, our residents are prepared to educate future doctors in the osteopathic profession through lecture/lab sessions they create for osteopathic medical students and house staff.
