Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM3) “Plus 1 Year”

The Virtua Health (ONMM3) "Plus 1 Year" Residency Program with Rowan-Virtua SOM offers integrated learning and patient care in a variety of settings throughout Southern New Jersey. Residents are exposed to a diverse rotation of specialty areas and have the freedom to attend additional conferences and presentations to suit their medical interests.

Rotations and Hospital Affiliations

Residents in this program train at Rowan-Virtua SOM Ambulatory Clinics, Rothman Orthopaedics, Modern Pain and Spine, Virtua Voorhees Hospital, Virtua Medical Group, and through continuity clinics with NMM/OMM board-certified physicians.

Virtua Voorhees Hospital, our sponsoring institution, in Voorhees New Jersey is a state-of-the-art, 408-bed regional medical center known for high-volume specialty care. For an ONMM3 resident, the hospital provides a diverse clinical environment that bridges the gap between traditional medical management and osteopathic structural care. Our resident is assigned to a two-month longitudinal block on the Inpatient ONMM Consultation Service. Responsibilities include: Triaging and evaluating consult requests from hospitalists, surgeons, and within the labor and delivery unit. Performing comprehensive structural exams on acutely ill or post-surgical patients. Formulating and executing OMT plans tailored to the patient's acute medical status.

Rowan-Virtua SOM Department of Osteosciences & NeuroMusculoskeletal Institute offers an ambulatory residency training site in Stratford and Sewell. These sites offer full-scope ambulatory care for patients with pain disorders, including psychiatry, pain management, osteopathic manipulative medicine, headache center, substance use, and psychology. Residents will complete their PM&R and continuity clinic hours at these locations.

Rothman Orthopaedics offers an ambulatory residency training site in Marlton and Washington Township. These sites offer full-scope orthopedic specialties, as well as sports medicine. Residents will complete their orthopedic and sport medicine rotation at these locations.

Modern Pain & Spine offers an ambulatory residency training site in Deptford. The site offers full-scope innovative pain management, acute and chronic pain control with ambulatory surgery. Residents will complete their pain management rotation at this location.

Through the Virtua Medical Group, our sponsoring institution, the Virtua Reconstructive Orthopedic and Virtua Rheumatology practices offer our residents their Orthopedic rotation and Rheumatology experience at these sites.

  • Virtua Reconstructive Orthopedics site provides outpatient/inpatient rotation in orthopedics. The resident will rotate with orthopedic physicians who specialize in elbow, shoulder, wrist, hand, and foot and ankle. The resident will spend time with orthopedic and sports medicine physicians observing sports medicine and orthopedic outpatient and/or treatment of patients. This site is a multi-disciplinary musculoskeletal medicine outpatient and inpatient site.
  • Virtua Rheumatology site provides outpatient rotation as needed. Virtua Rheumatology is a specialized practice offering state-of-the-art management of arthritis, autoimmune diseases, and musculoskeletal conditions related to rheumatic diseases affecting joints, muscles, bones, skin, and other tissues. Our residents will deepen their understanding of systemic disease. This knowledge is crucial for ONMM residents who must recognize when a patient's musculoskeletal symptoms are not a result of mechanical dysfunction but a sign of broader systemic illness; refine their diagnostic skills this will help resident learn to recognize subtle clinical patterns of rheumatologic disease; and expand their treatment knowledge by assessing risks and benefits of biologic therapies, immunosuppressants and chronic steroid management.
