RowanSOM Transitional Year

The Transitional Year (TY) is designed to help explore a wide variety of medical specialties through service in both in-patient and out-patient facilities at health systems throughout Southern New Jersey. TY's benefit from in-depth clinical experiences that are enhanced by the educational expertise of committed and dedicated house officers‚ university faculty, and attending physicians. Rotations in a TY's specialty choice for a residency are completed during the first five months, when possible.

Program feedback from current resident, Richard Kim, D.O.:

This TY program is hidden gem. I'm going into PM&R and have been given a schedule that prepares me for my advanced specialty and caters to my interests. Thus far, I've had a great experience and would rank this TY program highly again in a heartbeat. Some of the highlights and notable details of this program include:

  • Electives tailored to your advanced specialty
    • elective options include Neurology, PM&R, Radiology, Orthopedic Surgery, Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Pediatric EM, Pulmonology, Cardiology
  • Three months of Internal Medicine wards.
  • 2-4 weeks of night float, 1-2 months of ICU (depending on advanced specialty).
  • One month of Emergency Medicine, one month of Surgery, one month of Family Medicine.
  • Twenty three paid time off days that can be split up in one-week increments.
  • Plenty of golden weekends with, on average, call only on one weekend per month - but varies with service.

Program feedback from current resident, Kelley Roach, D.O.:

  • Opportunity to do three months of electives.
  • Typically, one 24-hour call per rotation (except for night float and ICU). Meal money provided for call shifts.
  • Morning sign out at 7:00 a.m. and afternoon sign out at 5:00 p.m. (depending on rotation).
  • Intern lectures from 7:30-8:30 a.m., Monday to Friday.
