Student Health Insurance
Medical students are required to have active health insurance for the full duration of their enrollment.
The University-sponsored health insurance plan, Aetna Student Health (PPO), can be waived if students provide proof of active health insurance and complete a Waiver of Insurance and Certification.

- To utilize an alternate insurance plan such as the ones listed below, you must submit a waiver to University Health Plans with proof of insurance by the deadline listed on their website.
- Health insurance plans through Get Covered NJ
- For medical students with a NJ residence
- Health insurance plans through Healthcare.gov
- For medical students with a residence outside of NJ
- NJ Family Care
- For medical students with a NJ residence and financial need. **If you know in advance that you will be applying to NJ Family Care, it is suggested that you apply by August 1st at the latest, as it can take up to 90 days to receive an answer.**
- International students with an F-1 visa may utilize the international student insurance plan offered by ISI or ISO.
You need to fill out and submit the waiver for the University Health Plan by October 14, 2024. It is located on this website.
Yes, only if you have a Qualifying Life Event, which includes the following:
- Turning 26 years old and will no longer be covered under a parent’s health insurance
- Marriage
- Child is born or adopted
- Other Health Insurance coverage was terminated

It is recommended that you apply approximately 90 days in advance if you are able to, as it may take that amount of time to receive a decision on coverage.
No. If you use the University Health Plan, it cannot be waived. Do not use the University Health Plan if you plan to submit a waiver, as it cannot be removed from your bill once you have utilized it.
No. Once you have the University Health Plan, you have it for the full year term of coverage. (No refunds)
